Don:

As an educator, veteran, and a proud American who was on active duty at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas, on September 11, 2001, today I deliver a proposal that comes from a place of deep reflection and heartfelt conviction. The events of that day are etched into our collective memory, not just as a nation but as individuals who remember precisely where we were, what we were doing, and how our lives changed in an instant. On that day, we saw the very best of human spirit and resilience: from the first responders who ran toward danger without hesitation to ordinary citizens who came together to offer help, comfort, and hope in the face of unspeakable tragedy. Yet, as the years pass, we face the reality that many of our students were not yet born when these events unfolded. The significance of that day is at risk of fading from their consciousness, relegated to a distant chapter in their history books. I believe it is our duty, as educators and leaders, to ensure that we"Never Forget." Therefore, I propose the creation of a 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony to be implemented at all schools across our country, particularly at high schools with a Junior Reserve Officer Traning Corp program. This ceremony would serve as a powerful reminder of the lessons we learned that day: of courage, unity, and the profound impact of standing together as a community, a nation, and a world. It would honor the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the heroes who emerged in our nation's darkest hour. The ceremony could include a moment of silence at the exact times when each plane struck, the raising and lowering the schools flag, while taps is played. I truly believe that such a ceremony, particularly at schools with Junior Reserve Officer Traning Corp programs, could be a profoundly meaningful experience for our students, staff, and communities. It can foster a sense of pride, empathy, and understanding that transcends generations and backgrounds. I would be honored to assist in the development and coordination of this ceremony and to work closely with district leaders, school administrators, and Junior Reserve Officer Traning Corp instructors to ensure that it is both respectful and impactful. In remembrance and solidarity, I hope you will consider this proposal. Let us come together to ensure that the events of September 11th remain not just a memory but a legacy: a legacy of strength, unity, and unwavering resolve. Thank you for your consideration. With sincere respect, Master Sergeant Don Fessenden Retired. United States Air Force.
